Have A Holly Jolly Recipe

We had a Holiday Treat Exchange of sorts at work today, so I spent the latter half of last night baking away the lovelies you see above. They are White Chocolate Candy Cane Drops and they are divine. The actual cookie itself isn't very sweet but you'll come across a chunk of white chocolate or peppermint with just a touch of additional sweet goodness. The cookies are soft too, which was a plus. Check out how to make below:

Prep: 40 min. |Bake: 8 min/batch |Oven: 375°F

Makes: About 50 Cookies

Ingredients: 8 oz. white choc baking squares with cocoa butter, ½ cup softened butter, 1 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon salt, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour, 2/3 cup finely crushed peppermint candies

Instructions:

(1) Preheat oven to 375°F. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper; set aside. Chop 4 oz. of the white chocolate; set aside. In a small saucepan heat and stir the remaining 4 ounces of white chocolate over low heat until smooth. Set aside to let chocolate cool slightly.

(2) In a large mixing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar, baking powder and salt. Beat until combined scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in eggs and vanilla until combined. Beat in melted white chocolate. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in any remaining flour, the chopped white chocolate and crushed peppermints.

(3) Drop dough by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until light brown around edges. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool.

Side Note: I only used 4 oz. of the white chocolate. 8 oz. seemed a bit much and excessive. They tasted just fine btw! :)

Molten-Centered Chocolate Cupcakes : A Recipe

I made these last winter for my bible study and didn't like them so much, though no one complained. They weren't sweet enough, so I tweaked the recipe and made these, oh about three weeks ago and got it just right. They're sweet but not too sweet and the chocolate filled center definitely adds to the goodness of this little delight!

Ingredients (Yields 12):

8 tbsp soft margarine
1 cup of sugar
2 large eggs
1 cup self-rising flour
2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa
4 oz. of semisweet chocolate (chunks versus morsels)
confectioners' sugar for dusting

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375° and put 12 cupcake baking cases in a muffin pan.
Place the margarine, sugar, eggs, flour and cocoa in a large mixing bowl. Using an electric hand mixer, beat together until just smooth.
Spoon half of the batter into the cupcake baking cases (wrappers). Using a teaspoon, make an indentation in the center of each cake. Place chunks of chocolate in each indentation.
Spoon the remainder of the mixture on top of each cupcake.
Bake the cupcakes for 20 minutes or until well risen and springy to the touch. Leave the cupcakes for 2-3 minutes before serving and dust with sifted confectioners' sugar

Heaven's Wager : A Review

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

I borrowed this book from my friend Dee and have had it in my possession for over a year. I started it, put it down for months before deciding to pick it up again this summer. The book is considered a Christian thriller and overall has a decent plot but I found it quite intense (thus me putting it down for weeks/months at a time.) I will soon tell you why.

Ted Dekker starts this little tale off with the seemingly perfect life of the protagonist, whom I grew to not like so much, Kent Anthony. He has a promising career as the lead programmer for a bank operating system, a beautiful wife, a son, a nice home... the American Dream but even from the beginning you can tell that the character is not fulfilled or thankful for what he has, though he has it in his mind that the "stuff" of this world is what makes people happy. His life comes crashing down when his wife suddenly becomes ill and passes away. Shortly after, he loses his son and the program that was essentially his brainchild is now intelligent property of his boss and the bank president.

After the first 100 pages or so, the story picks up (a lot of depressing descriptives of Kent coping with his losses prior to this point in the book) and you see the true inner workings of the main character's mind. He's completely lost it and devises this over the top revenge scheme to get back the bonus money from the program he deemed was rightfully his.

Strewn throughout the craziness that is Kent Anthony's life are these sublime vignettes of his mother in law, Helen Crane interceding on Kent's behalf. She was my personal favorite character of the story. She and Kent's wife and son (Gloria and Spencer) would meet weekly to pray over Kent's soul. (They are Christian and he is not). Throughout you see a beautiful display of Helen's belief in a real God through her "faith" walks and encounters with the unseen, in regards to the saving (or wager) over Kent's soul. Dekker also, though briefly, mentions and speaks of Helen's past which I found absolutely intriguing.

I recommend this book but take note that it may not be for everyone. Though I struggled through Kent's pity parties and grand (and sometimes grotesque) scheme, the moment he was awakened and broke free from his strongholds was a breathtaking moment, leaving me in a puddle of tears but full of hope. Hope in the fact that we serve a God that loves us and in return wants us to show him our love for him!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Pizza: A Recipe

I made this a while ago and took pictures and video while making it. My intention was to do a video tutorial but my laptop is slow and outdated and needs to be replaced. At any rate, here's a wonderful picture of the pie below. Peanut Butter & Chocolate (I see a pattern here... I must really LOVE chocolate) are like the best combination in my opinion. Better than peanut butter & jelly, peas & carrots, french fries & milkshakes... well maybe not the last one but you get the gist of it.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2-1/4 cups of all-purpose flour
2-1/2 cups chopped miniature peanut butter cups (about 25)
1 cup chopped peanuts
1-1/4 cups tiny marshmallows

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350° F. Lightly grease a 13 to 14 inch pizza pan; set aside.
In a large mixing bowl beat butter and shortening for 30 seconds.
Add sugar, baking powder and salt. Beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally.
Beat in egg and vanilla until combined.
Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer and stir in any remaining flour.
Pat dough onto prepared pizza pan, building up edges slightly.
Bake dough for about 12 minutes.
Pull pizza pan out of oven and sprinkle with chopped peanut butter cups and peanuts.
Bake about 5 more minutes.
Sprinkle with marshmallows.
Bake about 5 more minutes or until crust is golden.
Cool in pan on a wire rack and cut pizza into wedges.

You can refrigerate the bars for up to three days. It's a super yummy treat that adults and children will both enjoy.

Cinnamon Bites: A Recipe

While perusing around a very cool website that I frequent often, Pinterest (if you're interested in joining, I can send you an invite), I saw that my friend Bianca had pinned a pretty picture of Cinnamon Breakfast Bites on her "Nom Nom" board and so I surfed on over to the source webiste, Oh My! Sugar High and snatched the recipe right on up. I woke up this morning in a mood to bake and so it goes.

Ingredients

1-1/3 Cups of All-Purpose Flour

1 Cup of Crisp Rice Cereal, Coarsely Crushed

2 Tablespoons Sugar

3 Teaspoons Baking Powder

1/2 Teaspoon Salt

1/4 Cup Butter-Flavored Shortening

1/2 Cup of Milk

1/2 Cup of Sugar

1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon

1/4 Cup Butter, Melted

Directions

Mix flour, crushed cereal, 2 tablespoons sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl
Cut in shortening with a fork until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs
Add milk and stir until all of the mixture is moistened
Roll dough into approx. 2-1/2 dozen 1" balls
Mix cinnamon and 1/2 cup of sugar in a small bowl
Drop balls into melted butter, then roll in cinnamon/sugar mixture
Place balls onto a greased pan
Bake at 425° for 15-18 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean
Cool for a few minutes in a pan on a wire rack before removing

And that's it. Easy. Simple. Yummy. They sort of taste like cinnamon biscuits and are great with a cup of coffee or a glass of milk. Happy Baking & Eating.

What a HUNKY Burger!

Over the years I've come to the conclusion that I really, really like burgers. I could probably eat a burger every other day (too much of anything isn't good for anyone). So my mom, brother and I have been trying out a few places around the metroplex and a while back I took them to Hunky's in the Bishop Arts District. I got the bleu cheese burger with tots, which was amazing. They cook the bleu cheese crumbs into the meat! Yum! CJ & mom got plain ole' cheese burgers & fries.

I learned about Hunky's through my friend Chevondolyn. She and her husband hosted their daughter's first birthday party there and simply put I was totally impressed. The burgers tasted homemade not manufactured, they have great fries/tots and their shakes and malts are amazing. The atmosphere is nice. It's set up like a 50's diner, decor wise. So if you're ever in or near Oak Cliff you should definitely check them out.

Why It's Called Faith

There were times in my life when I doubted, not necessarily the existence of God but if he cares for me or even knows who I am. I worried without cause. I thought I could solve all of my problems. I believed in people instead of the God who knows exactly how many strands of hair are on my head. My creator.

Some months ago, while reading the book of Hebrews the Holy Spirit allowed this Scripture to stand out to me. It was the first time it really sank in that I must believe wholeheartedly, not half way. Not when I'm in trouble or when it's convenient for me. God's word says in Hebrews 11:1 that faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. We believe even though we can't see. And this belief without the physical evidence of God's existence and his Sovereignty brings him pleasure. Something so small yet so big matters to him. It matters when you choose Him over the things of this world.

The good thing about faith is when you do start to allow Jesus Christ to LORD over your life and develop a relationship with him, he will reveal himself to you... in ways you can't even begin to imagine. He will give you ears to hear and eyes to see the truth in a world filled with lies and corruption.

Keep It Sealed

I'm going to call myself out and let you all know that, like you, I have weaknesses and faults and struggles. I have a foul mouth (there... I said it) that I am soooo NOT proud of. It's a terrible habit I picked up at a young age and have had difficulty over the years trying to shake; we'll call it a "thorn" of sorts.

I've always viewed swearing as something awful and yet I find myself spewing out these terrible words when faced with opposition or if I'm upset about something or with someone. It's been a hard struggle but everyday with God it gets easier. The day I really asked for forgiveness (repented) and then professed my sin to an accountability partner, God provided a breakthrough for me by giving me this scripture to hold on and refer to when I feel the urge to want to say something ugly (or mean, hurtful, etc.)

Our tongues are powerful tools and the words that come out should be filled with encouragement, hope and love NOT hate, foolishness and perversity. To do this we must take captive our thoughts and counter these thoughts with God's truths. I keep this scripture with me at all times...literally. It stays in my purse on an index card as a reminder to me of who I belong to and who I am representing when I speak.

Spare The Rod

We've all heard Job's story... a man who loves the Lord and is living his life as good as a human can, loses everything: his children, wife, home, material possessions and is plagued with painful sores all over his body. The point of this tale is not to show how terrible things happen to good people because the fact of the matter is we will all, at some point in our lives, experience terrible things whether we are "relatively" good people or not. The point of the story is how we cope... by ourselves or with God.

Life's trials and tribulations aren't meant for you to brood over or to make you hate your life. They are meant to test your faith muscle. To get you to turn your focus from your circumstances to the Deliverer. God allows things to happen for reasons sometimes beyond our understanding but we can always rely on him to see us through. No one likes going through the troubles that come from living in a fallen world but we will all experience pain, suffering and sorrow in our lives. Why not go through it with the one who loves you more than you could ever imagine? And we must remember that though Job lost everything, God RESTORED him!

On a side note, if everything is A-OK in your life, you may need to evaluate the things you're doing. Remember in Job's story, Satan wanted to prove to God that Job wasn't a faithful, righteous servant and asked permission to attack him. If you're not being attacked, you're not a threat to the enemy. If you're not a threat to the enemy, then perhaps you're not doing the work God has called you to do in your life.

Don't Miss Out

Looking back, I wish I'd known what I now know. I think about the opportunities that could have been that I allowed to pass me by because of fear, anger, doubt and worry. In recent years, I've decided to no longer yield to myself but to the will of the Lord, living for him fully. When I'm aligned with him I can do and accomplish the things he has set before me. Whether the tasks he ask of me be difficult or uncomfortable, I know that I can get through them with him and he's not going to put more on me than I can handle. Being obedient is the key. If we listen and act, God will open wide the doors of opportunity that will allow you to fully walk in the destiny He has planned for you.

He is the giver of gifts, the lifter of our heads and the lover of our SOULS. With Him the deemed "impossible" is possible.

To Die To Oneself

My bible study group has begun a new bible study and format to our meetings. We're doing The Derek Prince Bible Study and the first area of study is entitled God's Plan of Salvation. The life question posed this week was a rhetorical one: Christ died for us, why not live for Him? We were then asked to choose a Godly activity to engage in and commit to doing for the next sevens days. I've comitted to blogging about certain Scriptures the Lord has placed on my heart. I will pray before posting, of course, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide me in my understanding of each scripture as I share my thoughts with you all. I'm a day behind but here goes the first scripture:

I went to a concert this weekend. There were thousands of people there to see the band and they were all overjoyed and excited to see them perform, as I had been the many times I'd seen them before. There was a moment near the end of the show when the band walked off the stage and the crowd went crazy and started chanting the name of the band and beating on the chairs. I was so caught up in the moment that I began to partake in the ritual but I suddenly stopped myself and looked around. It was then that I realized how much people idolize other people. It was like they were summoning their "god" to reappear and give them something they wanted. In this case a few more songs for their entertainment.

I've seen this band probably close to a dozen times but this time it was different... mostly because I am different. The difference now is that my life's focus isn't on a person, place or thing. I'm not consumed with wanting to "fit in" or be a part of the "IN" crowd persay and I'm also not allowing myself to place people or things on a pedestal. That space is now solely dedicated to my Creator. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the band perform and basked in a bit of nostalgia for the moment but that's exactly what it was "a moment". A fleeing moment that only gave me temporary happiness and soon made it's departure. Yes, I'll have the memory but that's what it will remain... a memory.

We all tend to focus on the "things" of this world (i.e. careers, money, hobbies, our spouses, children, finding Mr. Right). I can say this because it's something I struggle with everyday but when you know better, you should want to do better and so I pose this to you... find some time everyday to acknowledge the One who created you and let Him know just how important a relationship with Him means to you.

People and things are temporary but a relationship with God through Jesus Christ is eternal.

What's All The Hoopla??

Apparently I can't resist a swap. I've been burned twice and yet I came back for more but this time it paid off. I received a gorgeous embroidery hoop from the Embroidery Hoopla Rnd 5 Color Spectrum Swap on craftster.org and all I can say is that I was completely and utterly blown away with my hoop. Here are some pics:

Detail#1 - I used standard floss but also tried my hand at metallic floss which was a pain to work with. I kept getting tangled and bunched up in spots I didn't want it to. I usually have a back that's as clean and pretty as the front but I couldn't achieve that with the metallic floss.

That's it in a nutshell. I really enjoyed this swap and received a wonderful gift that I hope to keep for a very long time!

Off The Shelf

At the beginning of the year I made a list of things I wanted to do this year and with us being at the half way point, I haven't really done too much on that list! I'm not sure why but I just haven't gotten around to some of the things on the list but I digress. I'm really going to focus on not getting so caught up on television shows or even the internet and focus on reading more. PSYCH SWAP - Round 3

At one point I had sworn off of swaps because I had two flakers in a row. I got an angel (someone who volunteers to be a craft rescuer) for one swap and then opted to not have one for the second time I got flaked on but I digress. I had been watching my Psych DVDs a couple times a week and decided that I was going to try my hand at organizing a craft swap and thus came the brilliant idea to once again pay homage to my favorite tv BFFs! LOL! I'm organizing through Craftster and sign-ups just closed. We'll have a month of crafting and send outs will be July 5th! I'm so stoked about this. When You "Wist" Upon A Star

"Wists" is short for Web Lists and is basically a website used to store things you like from various websites (a web wish list of sorts). It's very similar to the wish list feature on Amazon.com but you can store little thumbnail images of your favorite things from practically any and every site on the world wide web.

I first heard about wists on (you guessed) it my favorite website, Craftster.org. Users had these little wists url's in their signature and of course, me being the lurker that I am, I was intrigued and clicked on someone's wists (perhaps a swap partner of mine - I can't recall) and was hooked. I signed up and got "wist" away.

It's pretty easy to use. There's a little browser toolbar button you install and when you're on a website and find something you like you can push the _Add to Wists button and another page will pop up for you to select the image you want. Once you select the pic, you'll have to tag the image and can comment about the item if you like. On your actual wists page there are rows of little thumbnails with the info and a link back to the website the item is located.

Some wists users have pages upon pages of bookedmarked items but I have a measley 41 bookmarks of things I find cool and interesting (i.e. a tape dispenser that looks like an old school cassette tape. heels covered in non pareils and dandelion wall vinyl decals just to name a few).

It's a really neat way to sort of let your people (i.e. friends, family, craft swap buddies) get to know you and your style. Who knows, maybe one day a pal of yours will surprise you with that amazingly gorgeous butterfly crocheted beanie! *hint*hint* :)

Chocolate Chips + Cupcake Tins = Mmm Mmm Good

I didn't post much at all last month, so I'm trying to play catch up. To continue on with my list of 11 Things To Do in '11, I baked Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cupcakes for the month of March! YAY! I love just about anything chocolate chip and found a really cool recipe in a book my aunt got me for my birthday called Perfect Muffins & Bakes and decided to try it out one Sunday afternoon. They are just sweet enough but not too, too rich and I even added a little dusting of confectioners sugar to top them all off. Below is a picture of my beauties and the recipe. If you make, I'd love to hear how they turned out!

Yields 8-9

Ingredients:
* 7 Tbsp Soft Margarine
* 1/2 Cup of Sugar
* 2 Large Eggs
* 3/4 Cup of Self-Rising Flour
* Generous 1/2 Cup of Semisweet Chocolate Chips

Preparation:

1. Put 8-9 muffin paper cases in a muffin pan.

2. Put the margarine, sugar, eggs and flour in a large bowl and, using an electric hand mixer, beat together until just smooth. Fold in the chocolate chips. Spoon the batter into the paper cases.

3. Bake the cupcakes in a preheated oven, 375° F for 20-25 minutes or until well risen and golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Redeeming Love : A Review

I was pleasantly surprised at the visceral and raw emotion Francine Rivers flawlessly executed in the prologue of Redeeming Love, setting up the back story of what most would deem a hopeless situation for a very young and innocent girl. Sarah, the main character, though bright and beautiful endured unspeakable pain and suffering beginning at the tender age of eight.

The story itself is a modern day retelling of the Book of Hosea, in which God tells one of his faithful servants to marry a prostitue. Mrs. Rivers amazingly captures the parallels of the relationship between the main characters and Christ's love, specifically his longing for a deep, meaningful and intimate relationship with his creation. As I eagerly flipped through the pages, wanting to know more, I found myself provoked by emotions such as anger, fear, love, joy and hopefulness. I saw a bit of myself in Sarah, putting all my hope in people and things as oppose to my creator, not fully trusting him to see me through.

Redeeming Love will leave you encouraged and spiritually full and I highly recommend this book to anyone who hungers for God's truths, thirsts for his peace, wants to be filled with His overwhelming love or just feels like they're living life and trying to make it on their own. The truth is... You don't! :)

Hook 'Em??

About three weeks ago a co-worker and myself started a beginners crochet class at a local scrapbook store. It's been a neat experience in that I picked it up much faster than I thought, though I was quite the tense crochet...er (is that a word???) I have to learn to not have such a tight grip, which has been a process. It comes and goes really. Anyway, here's what we've learned so far.

Week One:
*Chain Stitch
*Single Crochet

Week Two:
*Crochet
*Slip Stitch
*Granny Square

The second picture is actually a project I've been adding on to since week one. Everytime I learn a new stitch, I practice it on this little bag.

Week Three:
*Adding in more yarn or a different color yarn (as seen in week 2 granny square pic)
*Triple Crochet

That's about it for now. I'll try to post a pic of the finished scarf once it's completed! I'm so stoked about learning a new craft.

So all who dwell in the DFW area got iced out today. I work about ten minutes from my job, so I ventured out (reluctantly) and got there safe only to find that about a handful of us actually made it in. I was there about two hours when we got the notice that we were officially shuttin' it down at 1 PM, so I wrapped up what I was working on and slipped and slid myself back home. 11 in '11

I'm not big on making resolutions but I'm all about self improvement, which, in my opinion, we should strive for every day we've been given. This year my top priority (Thank you Tal & Acacia) is seeking first His Kingdom, allowing God to lead me, not myself. There are other things I'd really like to do which, I believe, will enrich my life is some form so I made a list (I love lists) of eleven things I'd like to accomplish in 2011.

1. Seek First The Kingdom - I plan on doing so by diligently being in the Word, surrouding myslef with godly people and engaging in deep prayer daily.

2. Plant & Sow Good Seed - by finding a volunteer ministry at church in which I can utilize my God given talents, encourage and spread the good news about God's love.

3. Spend Time W/Friends & Family - My brother is planning on joining the armed forces after high school, so I'd really love to spend as much time as I can with him before he leaves. My dad's family is having a reunion this April and I'd love to go and "reconnect" with them and I seriously plan on paying my really good friend Najah a visit at her new home in Boston.

4. Budget, Budget, Budget - Often we make plans without really thinking about the financial aspect of it all. I plan on really organizing this part of my life, basing it on biblical principals such as tithing, giving and living within my means.

5. Read! - I personally think I spend way too much time in front of the tube so my goal this year is to shut off the tv (for a little while anyway :) and read at least 12 books this year. That would be one book a month and I have a list already, which I'll go over in another post! :)

6. Establish My Personal Style - This may sound corny but as much as I like fashion, I don't think I have a whole lot of fashion sense. Sense in that I'm not a risk taker or even put a lot of thought into my wardrobe, make-up (well, actually I do put some thought into make up) and especially accessories. So I've purchased a few books to encourage and aid me in this journey of creating a personal style for myself.

7. Bake Something Once A Month - Around the holidays I realized how much I really enjoy baking. It was fun and relaxing. Very therapuetic and I found I wanted to do it more and more, so I've decided to try my hand at something new and interesting each month this year. I baked cupcakes for my God-daughter's birhtday party this month and next month I think I'm going to try to make tiramasu biscotti! YUM! :)

8. See A Play - or visit a museum or go to a local jazz concert. Just get out and get cultured to the many wonderful arts accessible to all.

9. Learn To Crochet - I've been dying to learn how to crochet. There are so many cute things I can think of to make but I really need this skill to pull it off and I'm determined to be able to crochet any and everything I want by the end of this year.

10. Re-Decorate My Bedroom - In a Parisian theme or continue with the chocolate and Tiffany's blue I have going on at the moment and just update it. I think it will be fun and I have a stellar idea for some artwork to hang over the bed.

11. Write - A little unknown fact about me is that I love to write (maybe the blog was a giveaway... IDK) Anyway, I would love to write a novel some day and I think that if I take a little time out each day to pursue this dream, maybe something good can come out of it. Who knows?!?

There's one thing I really like almost (if not about the same) as much as glitter (LOL) and that is Christmas music. To give you all an example of how much I like Christmas music, I purchased four Christmas albums this year, before December and started pulling out and organizing my Christmas CD's at the beginning of October. Too much? Probably but I love the stuff. It's fun, happy music and it makes me smile!

Connection

It's a rare occasion that I get to go out to concerts as often as I used to but I'm so happy I got the opportunity to see Cas Haley live at the Granada before he completely blows up. Cas was promoting his new album Connection, another great effort of easy going, soothing reggae infused soul. The one thing I fan girled about when I spoke with Cas at the merch table was how pristine and his vocals were live. I was completely shocked and taken by the clarity of his voice. Most of the time you sing along because you know the words but I could actually understand everything he belted out.

For those not familiar with Cas, he was the runner up on the second season of America's Got Talent. I had no idea who he was until a co-worker of mine introduced me to his musice. She gave me a copy of his self titled album and I was impressed. He came to Dallas shortly after my introduction but I didn't get a chance to see him then, so when he came again, I made sure I was there and it was definitely worth it.

There were two other bands/artist that opened for Cas. The first being an Austin based reggae ensemble called Don Chani. Great band creating really chill, relaxing music. The second artist that performed did a record with Cas called Favorites. His name is Josh Heinrichs and he used to be with a reggae group called Jah Roots and is also a stellar vocalist.

The Re-Cycle

Back in August, I signed up for a swap called "Invite Your Own Partner" and I asked a girl I swapped with for my Psych swap and we decided, after several private messages back and forth, to do recycled material wall art. I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do and mentioned it to a co-worker of mine and she suggested that I make a startburst out of paper and told me to roll up a bunch of pieces of paper into tight "straws" so to speak. (BTW- if you're reading, thanks soooo much Terry! :) So, I went home and started digging through my craft boxes in an attempt to come up with a way to execute the starburst wall art. It was a success and I've decided to share it with you all. Below is a step-by-step how-to for recycled material wall art. I'd love to hear your feedback if you decide to try this out and how easy (or hard- hopefully not) the tutorial is to follow.

What You'll Need:

magazine pages in the colors of your choice

sequins in the colors of your choice

two blank cd's

a plastic water bottle cap

thick scrapbook paper

mod podge

super glue

glue dots

glue stick

glitter spray paint

After you've selected the magazine pages you like roll them as tight as you can into a straw or tube. Before you get to the end, run your glue stick all along the edge, so that when your done rolling, the paper will affix itself to the edge. Note- you may have to look through several magazines in order to get enough pages of the colors you want.

After you've rolled several magazine pages, you can add a little flair by cutting the tops of the "rays" like the above or anyway you see fit. If you like them straight, keep them straight.

Now on to the fun (but oh so messy) part. Be very careful because you'll be using super glue to affix the "rays" to one of the blank CD's. Just draw a strip of glue on the cd and place the ray on top of it, applying just a little bit of pressure.

Try to place them around the CD evenly like so.

The first round of them are now in place. Now you'll want to add more in between the rays that are now on the CD, filling in any gaps, the same way you placed the original ones.

Now add glue on top of all the rays. You'll want to do this fairly quickly and it doesn't have to be nice and neat because it's going to be covered up anyway.

Promptly, place the other blank CD on top of the glued rays.

You'll want to make sure the top CD is in alignment with the bottom one.

You'll want to trace one of the CD's beforehand on a piece of pretty thick (but not cardstock thick) scrapbook paper and cut it out. Trace the bottle cap in the center of the circle and cut it out. Add the mod podge on the back side of the scrapbook paper with a sponge applicator or whatever you have handy.

Place it on top of the blank CD, pressing down firmly to make sure it stays in place.

Add super glue around the edge of the opening (onto the clear part of the CD) and place the plastic bottle cap on top of the glue.

Using glue dots or a regular glue stick, add the sequins around the edge of the plastic bottle cap. This is to help camouflage the cutting out of the center hole. It never, ever comes out the way you want it to so this is a good way to hide the imperfection.

To give it that little extra something, spray paint it with a multi colored glitter spray paint.

I just really love glitter... like abnormally like glitter, so you don't really have to do this part if you don't want to! :) And voila, you're finished.

Hiya peeps... it's been a minute since I've posted. Not a whole lot going on, just been a bit lazy and when I want to post, I'm usually engaged in something and can't get to my computer (note to self... might be nice to invest in a cell phone that has web access... maybe.) In the last two months I got an opportunity to do some stuff around Dallas I haven't done in a very long time and would like to share those experiences/things with you all. Anyway, this post is just to give you all some insight into post to come. So let the list begin:

Mmm, Mmm, Good

A few years back, when I was an RA at Kerr Hall, my friend Corliss and I were working the front desk when someone (I can't recall who but they were truly an angel of God) brought us each a superb slice of cake made by one of my Hall Director's wife. Lo and behold the absolutely delicious chocolate chip pound cake. It's so moist, you don't even need to frost it and it's so good you may slap someone... I'm just saying. It's super easy to make and I thought I'd share the recipe I use all the time. If you decide to make and feast, let me know how it turned out.

Ingredients:
* 1 Box of Yellow Cake Mix (I usually get the one with butter in the recipe)
* 1/2 cup of sugar
* 1 large box of instant chocolate chip pudding
* 2/3 cup of water
* 3/4 cup of oil (vegetable oil is what I typically use)
* 4 medium eggs
* 8 oz. of sour cream
* 6 oz. of mini chocolate chips

(Note: You don't want to use regular size chocolate chips because they don't suspend in the mixture well and will sink to the bottom of the cake pan.)

Preparation:
* Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees
* Mix the first 6 ingredients first until there are no lumps
* Mix in the sour cream
* Fold in the mini chocolate chips with a wooden spoon or spatula
* Pour all of the batter into a baking pan (Most use a bundt cake pan)
* Place on the middle rack in the oven and bake for one hour

Voila! Bon Appetit! :)

Swap It Out, Swap It Out

I've mentioned before that I participate in craft swaps and then it dawned on me that many of you are probably thinking, what exactly is a craft swap, so here is my post dedicated to explaining the ever so awesome activity of craft swapping.

When I first moved to Vegas, I had no peeps (other than my mom and brother) and found myself bored, so I'd spend stupid amounts of wasted time surfing the net. Well, while snooping, looking for a how-to on some craft project (probably bath & body related) I came across one of the coolest websites ever Craftster.org. It is now my home away from Facebook. I love it. It's basically a community of people who love to craft, where they can post projects, get ideas and inspiration, get tutorials, post tutorials, enter craft challenges (with actual prizes for winners) and swap (the latter being one of my favorite things to do).

They have a board for just about every craft imaginable (i.e. crochet, knitting, needlework, sewing, dolls, beading, jewelry, food, occassions, reuse/recyled crafts, fiber arts, bath and beauty, ceramics, pottery, polymer clay (you get the gist of it).

Within each board are general technique topics, Q&A, posted projects from users and tutorials graciously posted by users (usually because there's a demand for instructions).

Now to my favorite... SWAPS!

Basically what you do is sign up for a swap you're interested in participating in. For instance I've done a few swaps now: Home Made Rubber Stamps, Make Me A Journal, Bath/Body/Spa Swap, The Princess Bride, The IT Crowd and Psych. The swaps can be to make a singular item (such as the stamps or a hand embroidered tea towel) or can be themed or centered around a television show, movie, band, etc.

Once you find a swap you think you'd like, you'll fill out the questionnaire that is provided and posted in the thread by the swap organizer. You'll send this to the organizer in a PM or private message. They'll review and make sure you're eligable and once approved you'll be added to the list and have the swap information posted in your profile. The eligability is based off of a few factors: (1) you have to have posted in the forum at least 15 times (2) some organizers don't like newbies, so if it's your first time, you may look for a swap that doesn't mind someone new to swaps and (3) if you've flaked (i.e. signed up, received a package but didn't send one out) you are stripped of your swapping privileges. A list of all the official rules can be found here.

Swapping can be fun but a little overwhelming at times too. When I was working on my projects for The Princess Bride, I was having artist block. I mean I couldn't come up with anything and when I had my moment of clarity, I had to haul butt to get it done. If you're a procrastinator, swaps may not be for you because they all have deadlines but if you keep the communication lines open with the organizer and your partner and let them know you might be sending late, you should have no problems. Natural Beauty

My cousin Shea and her daughters visited last week so I decided to take them to The Dallas World Aquarium. I hadn't been there in years so I was pretty stoked about going and the girls had never been to an aquarium. They both seemed to really enjoy it, though they are both very much "girly girls". When the sea otters came close to the glass doing their tricks Briana started to shutter. LOL!

I recommend that everyone check this place out. There's all kinds of wonderful, beautiful, colorful, unique creatures there... including the humans peering at the animals. :) Anyway, I took quite a few pictures but picked out a few I thought turned out nice and made a little video for you all to watch and enjoy. Tutorial: Glass Bead Magnets

I love crafting and just making stuff in general and thought I'd start posting tutorials of some of the projects I've made in the past. The first one I thought about sharing is for glass bead magnets. I've made these for two craft swaps in the last couple of months and two of my co-workers made them for their kids/grandchildren. They're so quick and super easy to make. If you try these out, I'd love to know how well the tutorial worked for you (if it works for you at all).

Supplies:
• Thin Sheets of Scrapbook paper or Pictures printed from an inkjet printer*
• Flat glass beads about 1” in diameter
• Scissors or circular punch
• Pen or Pencil (not pictured)
• Glue Stick (not pictured)
• Water Bottle Cap (not pictured)
• Mod Podge
• Brush (I like to use the cheap sponge brushes)
• Ruler
• Magnets
• Super Glue

Not necessary but fun to use as add-on’s: punches (I used a small butterfly punch for this tutorial)

*Make sure not to use an actual photograph, as the mod podge does not work well with the gloss on photo paper.

Steps 1 & 2. Use a 1” round punch (or trace the cap of a water bottle) on the backside of a picture or sheet of scrap book paper. If you traced around the water bottle cap, cut inside the circle, close to the traced portion but not exactly on the line.

Steps 3 & 4. Using a glue stick, you can now add any extra embellishments. I added a purple butterfly and a lime green dragonfly I punched out. I also wrote “Rejoice” in the center. You can write on these or add sticker letters; whatever you like. Set that aside and pick up one of the flat glass beads. You can get these at a dollar store or any craft store. Dip the tip of your brush into your mod podge and brush a thin layer of it onto the flat side of the glass bead.

Steps 5 & 6. Immediately place the picture on the mod podge side of the glass bead and press down lightly, maneuvering the picture to be centered on the bead. Take the tip of the brush, dip it in the mod podge and lightly dab the brush all over the back of the picture, then brush across the back with a few strokes. Let the bead sit and dry. The front (picture through the glass) will look a bit cloudy at first but will dry clear.

Steps 7 & 8. Once the mod podge is completely dry, add a drop or two of super glue and kind of smear it around in the center. Add the magnet in the center and press down, but be careful not to move it around too much. Let it sit and dry as well.

End Result: And there you have it. They’re fun and SUPER easy to make. They make great gifts for all occasions and you can pretty much make them any way you want them. I hope you found this tutorial easy to follow and the craft fun! Happy Crafting! :)

Courting God?: Lady of Reckless Abandonment

It’s been over a month since I’ve posted anything concerning the original topic I posted and I have no real good excuse, only that I haven’t been reading the book on a consistent basis but I do have updates for the first chapter. Before I begin I just want to preface what I hope these posts stir in the reader: (1) as I reflect on myself and my relationship with Christ, I hope these insights somehow give others an opportunity to reflect on their relationship with Christ and (2) open up a conversation about how a believer’s life should be a reflection of Christ. These are mere inner observations about my life and where I am currently in my walk with my savior and so it begins:

Lady of Reckless Abandonment:
Reckless – utterly unconcerned about the consequences of some action; without caution; careless.
Abandonment – to yield oneself without restraint or moderation; to leave completely and finally.

Lady In Waiting uses the book of Ruth as it’s inspiration and so if you haven’t, read the book of Ruth (Old Testament) to receive better insight to the teachings. It’s not a very long book and is quite informative and entertaining.

The term reckless abandonment, seemed odd to me at first so I went to the dictionary just to get a better understanding for the meaning of those words and then it hit me: We are to completely and totally give our lives to the one that created us, allowing him to transform us, mold us into the women (and men) he has called us to be. We are to flee from our sinful nature and try to walk righteously, with God’s aid and not think or care about the consequences that come from abandoning our old life but look forward to the promises and blessings that come from being obedient to God in our new lives in Christ.

One of the questions posed in the first chapter is: Have you broken your alabaster box at the feet of Jesus? (See Mark 14:3-9 & Luke 7:36-39)?

This was a difficult question to answer because sometimes I feel like I have broken my alabaster box, committing everything in my life to God and sometimes I know I’m holding back, so I suppose I can say I’ve “cracked” my alabaster box, allowing some things to seep through for Jesus to take complete control of. I can honestly say I haven’t committed everything to him as I should (i.e. career choices, financial areas, etc.) It’s difficult to relinquish everything, especially when coming from the mentality that “I” am responsible for me and “I” have to take care of myself. I have to constantly remind myself that “He” created me and “He” can and will supply my every need but if I continue to hold on to things and try to take control, “He” will let go and let “me”. Though he is sovereign, the God we serve is not a dictator. He’s given us free will and it is up to us to make the correct choice. I’m not saying do nothing and God will take care of it. There are several steps we must take in order for God to do his spiritual work but we must first consult him (i.e. prayer and reading his Word) before taking action. I believe asking for his help is a form of breaking our alabaster box and I can definitely do a lot more of that.

Another question posed: What does the following statement mean to you: “Any woman who does not understand that she is complete in Jesus is susceptible to idolatry”?

People in general tend to use all sorts of things to fill the void in their lives (i.e. men, children & families, careers, exercise, food, people, material things, etc.) and by filling these voids with people and things, we can lead ourselves to obsessing and eventually idolizing – relying on these people and things to complete us as opposed to God completing us. People will fail you, no matter how much they love you (human love is limited and hits a ceiling) and “stuff” is fleeting, decaying each and every day, losing value and interest only to leave that void open and unfulfilled.

Run Monique, Run!

A little over a month ago, a co-worker of mine shared a workout program she did before she found out she was pregnant. It's a six weeks walk to run program. The goal: to be able to run 30 minutes straight. I'm always up for trying new things so I asked her for information on it and she emailed me the article from Prevention magazine. I asked my buddy Dee if she'd like to try it with me and she agreed.

The first week was... okay, a little hard because esentially I went from being fairly sedentary to starting a walking program that integrated a little bit of running. Before starting this I would work out maybe once a week and that's really stretching it. The first week was mostly walking with two-minute running (what we do is really more of a jog :) segments. The idea is to build up, adding minutes each day. We are now on our final week. Last week we ended jogging two twelve minute segments, walking for two minutes in between the two jogging segments and on Tuesday we are going to start with a two and a half minute warm up walk, jog 25 minutes and end with a two and a half minute cool down walk.

It really blows my mind how amazing our bodies are. If you had asked me a month ago if I would be able to run/jog for 10 minutes straight, I would have laughed in your face. But alas, God's Word is true... We are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). I'm really pleased with our diligence and am super thankful to have Dee doing this with me. It would have been immensely difficult to stay motivated on my own. I've added the Prevention article and our walk/run schedule (that we've somewhat followed) as a guide if anyone is interested. If you decide to try this out I'd absolutely love to hear your feedback.

The Extra “T” is for extra Talent!

So what happens when you mix two things I absolutely love…

That’s right folks CRAFTING & PSYCH! I shamelessly joined a craft swap dedicated to Psych. I just couldn’t help myself when I saw the thread on craftster. Even before I finished my The IT Crowd Swap, I signed up for the Psych Swap and man, I’m having a blast coming up with stuff to craft for my partner. She’s a first time swapper, so I kind of want to put my best foot forward and come up with some interesting cool stuff. I just completed the apron today with a hand embroidered pineapple on the front pocket/pouch. It’s made up of brown, green and yellow sequins with clear, white, dark & lime green beads. I was super stoked about the outcome of the apron.

I’ve also made (2) coasters that are in the shape of Hawaiian shirts sans Henry! I thought they were cute. They probably aren’t that durable but I really liked the idea and I didn’t do too bad of a job on the execution. On the back of each shirt is a quote from the show that is a fav of my partner.

I think I want to make at least two more smaller crafts. I was thinking a keychain in the shape of a pineapple, made out of polymer clay. Easy enough to mold. I made one on memorial day and burnt it by not paying attention to the dial on the oven! Ooops! And maybe some polymer clay earrings or magnets. I’m not sure what else will be made but I’m sure I’ll have fun making it.

Red, White and Blue!

Courting God?

I know the title of this post might sound strange to some but just read a little further and you'll understand the meaning. For my 28th birthday, my awesome sister in Christ, Dee, gave me a book entitled Lady In Waiting. I read through it but didn't really let it absorb. Recently, while cleaning out a few boxes and closets, I came across the book again and re-read the introduction and a chord struck in my Spirit that I should really take the development of my relationship with Christ to the next level. So, I'm going to re-read and journal according the study guide and meditation journal in the back of the book. This will be a journey of spending the time and effort, we (as people in general) would normally spend searching for a significant other and dating, on developing a more intimate relationship with Christ, thus Courting God!

I've decided to do this and kind of make it a public affair for a few reasons. One being that I think sometimes I feel like I have to be in a relationship because everyone else is in one but then I think about what God wants for me and my life. I know I'm in no shape or fashion able to choose a guy but my God is and I have and will continue to place my hope in him. He will be there when I'm lonely and I can always count on him to not let me down. He sees me in a way I can only wish to see myself and I believe that through this exercise I will be able to see myself the way God sees me. For, it is not about me but about him.

There is no greater time than now for me to fully commit and seek a true relationship with Christ. Like the apostle Paul said in 1 Corinhians 7:34b- An unmarried woman in concerned about the Lord's affairs: her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. While single, I can devote time to things that are pleasing to God and that can only lead to a life full of wonderous things. I'll try to update about this experience at least once a week. Comments and musings are welcome... let me know what you think!

Long Overdue

It's been six months since I've posted anything and really, I haven't been that present on the net in general (ie Facebook, Craftster, etc.). Anyway, I digress... I really wanted to get back to blogging just to chronicle the things I find interesting and beautiful. I replaced the old banner with the new one... it's my Spring Edition banner. I think it's quite lovely and was pleased with the overall outcome. Corel Paint Pro is awesome! Okay... no more tangents.

So for this post I wanted to just highlight some new music I've found and have been listening to. I came across Madita when searching for some Theivery Corporation CD on iTunes and loved what I heard and therefore purchased her self-titled record. If I had to compare her to someone (which I automatically did) I'd say she's a mixture of Esthero, Nelly Furtado and Corinne Bailey Rae. I think all of these artists are similar in a way but still hold on to their own unique style. Madita sounds like a smooth blended summer drink of all three in my opinion but don't take my word for it... check her out for yourself. Lessons from Ronde Voo

One of the things I anticipate most about my day is coming home to see my dog Ronde. You wanna know why? Because I get the best greeting in the world from him. He is so overly excited to see me that he can't contain himself. He hurls his body, jumping up towards me to give him a pat on the head and a rub on his belly. His tail swings about ferociously and he's just super excited to see me. I can be completely down and out or have had a tiresome, miserable day and just seeing his hyperactive welcome brings a smile to my face.

So why am I posting about coming home to my dog, you may ask? Because a little while ago the Lord revealed something to me (on one of the many occasions I came home to my ecstatic dog) that just totally blew my mind. Ronde's reaction to me is how the Lord wants us to be with him. He longs for us to be completely overcome with joy and excited to be in his presence. Just think about it for a moment. I supply Ronde's every need and because of my love and devotion to him, he reciprocates those same feelings everday. Now imagine the very being who created you, who supplies your every need and spared your life for the sake of his only son, waiting for you to acknowledge that he's there. I don't know about the rest of you but knowing He's got my back like that and loves me more than any human on the face of this Earth, brings me an overwhelming amount of pure, unadulterated joy and in turn I want nothing more than to reciprocate that love and adoration, as much as humanly possible, to the one who made me!

So, it's no secret that I love music... and I really take pleasure in finding new artsit and sharing their talents with others. With that said I came across one of the most fantastic Christian albums I have ever heard and I urge you all to check it out. Her name is Beckah Shae and the name of her album is Joy. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Beckah's lyrics alone will truly move you as she belts out spiritual truths on her sophomore effort. Tis The Season To Be...

... THRIFTY? RESOURCEFUL? Whatever you want to call it! With the way things are today, it's smart to spend wisely. I know, this may seem like I'm jumping the gun here, as Christmas is about two months away but bear with me... there's a clear point to this post.

I for one LOVE this time of year. It reminds me of warm nights chatting it up with my family, reminicing about times I never knew with my mother and aunts. Sadly, for quite a few people, it is a time of depression and dread. Our capitalist society place so much stock in "stuff" to the point where people are willing to do any and everything to get "things" for their loved ones. Possessions... things with absolutely no lifelong value occupy our minds, desires and ultimately become our personal idols. Don't get me wrong, gifts are nice to receive and give but they are not long lasting and I'd rather not stress myself out trying to buy material things. So, this year, I've decided to make gifts. Yes I said make, as in handmade, home sewn, sculpted, crafted goodies, from my stash of craft stuff, for my family and friends. Not a small feat but I'm going to try super hard to get everything done.

Here's a list of items I think I can pull off before Christmas:

* Scarves (This scares me a bit. I'm just learning how to crochet)
* Tote Bags (My specialty. I have new patterns I want to try out)
* Wallets (I have a tutorial to try out and tons of scrap fabric)
* Journals (I made one for a swap once and loved how it turned out)
* Spa Kits (Bath Bombs are so much fun to make)
* Eyeglass Cases (Another first)
* Polymer Clay Magnets (Ones shaped like donuts in particular :)
* Polymer Clay Earrings (This will be a first for me as well)

That's about it I think... if anyone has any suggestions, please send those my way!

A Long Time Coming

It has been many moon since I've posted to this blog and at one point I thought I would retire it completely but I suppose it wasn't meant to be deleted. In the past months I've had a desire to start this thing back up and be more devoted to posting. I had a purpose for this blog when I first started and I just found my motivation:

find the potential in every situation, whether its good or bad. find the potential in people, whether friend or foe. find the potential in yourself, whether you're courageous or fearful. find the potential in your surroundings, whether the grass is green or a wilted brown...

This is what it's all about. Viewing the world in a more optimistic way. Truly searching for the good in the people that inhabit our world and being mindful of the way I decide to live out my life. I want to be a reflection of Christ and maybe bring others along for the ride. Thus the updated blog. It's got a new look but the content shall be the same... just more of it! :) Anyway, that's it in a nutshell. There will be more adventures to come.

Attack of the Sweet Tooth

OK... so in the past I have really tried to watch what I eat. I usually do really well for about a week and then I don't just fall off the wagon, I tumble off, bump my head and slip into a coma... and it's all caused by my love of sweets! I just can't say no. As a matter of fact, instead of working out this weekend, which I try to do at least one day during my days off, I made cupcakes. The picture at the beginning of the post is one of the lovelies I baked. (Isn't it pretty?) My love for sweets has brought me to a full on obsession with cupcakes. I can't get enough of them. They even have bakeries that are dedicated to this delicious goodie. In Vegas there is this cute little shop called The Cupcakery. The treats are expensive, so I don't go there often. There are also places like Sprinkles in L.A. which I think have branched off into franchises in other cities. At any rate, I love sweets and just thought I'd rant and rave about my battle with not indulging my sweet tooth (too often :)

Slackers Don't Open Pandora's Box

It has been quite some time since I've posted anything. I have no excuses, just been a wee bit lazy I suppose. Anyway, I decided to update the look of the blog to fit the current season! Hope you all like! :-)

Anyway, to the post I go! So a co-worker of mine is also a music enthusiast and turned me on to two online personal radio stations. The premise is that you type in an artist that you like and the system finds songs/artists similar to the artist you initially searched and places their music on your personal station. I've tried both and prefer one over the other. They are, however, very similar.

Pandora seems to be the most liked, but not by me. Pandora now comes as a free feature, I believe, with the new iPhone. I found Pandora weak in many areas. I would search for an artists and their songs/albums would be blocked and Pandora would play an array of songs by artists it deemed similar that I just didn't dig (some really weird stuff IMO). And you don't have the option to completely ban an artist. Oh and then there's that whole you can only skip so many songs thing (which is also a con for the other online radio station).

With Slacker, on the other hand, you can manipulate and control your custom stations better. You can select as many artist as you want for your custom station and it gives you lots of really good recommendations. You can ban a song or the artist if you don't like it/them. In my opinion it's just all around better. If you like to listen to music at work these are two great options and I think you should certainly check them out and see which one fits your musical needs.

Savory Sumos

I was cruising around one of my favorite blogs, Hostess With The Mostess, and stumbled across a tiny add advertising these delectable goodies. They are gigantic gourmet fortune cookies made by a family owned company based in Dallas, TX called Sumo Cookies. They come in 2 sizes and you can even get them stuffed with treats. If you like you can even personalize the fortune.

When I say they are gigantic I mean they take up about half of a standard dinner plate. I'm sure it would take a good week or two to finish off the big sumo. If you check out thier website you can see all the different types of sumos and even a little video of their tasty treats that was featured on the Food Network.

Thieving Pets

That's right... what you have just witnessed is my dog, Ronde, breaking into the bathroom. I was shocked the first time he did this. The good news is that he can't open doors with knobs. The doors in the house just happen to be levers, thus easy access for the pup! More Ronde to come... stay tuned!!!

Not the Same

Last night I woke up around 3:30 AM and couldn't go back to sleep. This happens at least once every two weeks. Anyway, I usually turn on my t.v. and watch Daystar (a Christian network based in Dallas). Well last night Joni Lamb had Brandon Heath on and he sang his single I'm Not Who I Was. I've heard this song a million times but this time it made me cry. Why, you may ask? The answer is simple - I'm really not who I was, even from a year ago. Moving away from my friends and family was difficult and challenging at times but I really, honestly feel that God placed me out of my element to draw closer to him. Since I've been in Vegas I have learned more about myself, I have been baptized but more importantly I have truly developed a relationship with Christ. My actions have effected my spiritual growth. As he sang that song, I thought about the countless times in my past and present (because lets face it I am only human) I've said something nasty to someone or about someone or refused to forgive someone. The difference today is that the new Monique feels
remorse and doesn't want to be that person anymore... I'm different now. Now I reflect, even sometimes reluctantly, about how I would feel being on the receiving in or never being forgiven for my wrongs. I have learned to forgive and most importantly to love. So if I have ever personally said anything to anyone that may have hurt or made you feel less than wonderful, I apologize!!!

Matthew 7:12- So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Psalm 51:10- Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

That's a bunch of Crocus...

Pantone is a company that is the world-renowned authority on color. Every year they choose a color of the year and they forecast what colors are "in" a year before they are presented to the public. They are responsible for everything from what's the new "hot" color in fashion to matching colors for graphic arts.

I, as I'm sure this will come as no surprise, absolutely adore color. So I went fishing around the Pantone website and stumbled across a section of it called Colorstrology. There I found an interactive monthly color analysis. There is a selected color for every month and a special color for every day of the month. I looked up my birthday (February 8, for those of you not in the know) and my color for my date of birth was Crocus. Its kind of a mauve flavored purple. Although I like all colors, I'm not so partial to purples or mauves but its still nice. It also gives you a little synopsis of what type of person you are, based on the color. My 3 main qualities were DRIVEN (check), QUIRKY (double check), and CHARMING (check). My synopsis is:

PEOPLE BORN on this day tend to be charming and good-looking. Although you are warmhearted, your emotions are not easy for you to handle. You have a tough exterior but a sensitive feeling nature. You may use more energy keeping people away than you do connecting with them on an intimate level. Work and financial success usually comes easily to you. 10 Things That Make Me Happy

At the end of every issue of Domino there is the article 10 Things That Make Me Happy featuring various people from all walks of life and professions. It is one of my favorite reads in the magazine, so I decided to do my very own Make Me Happy List (in no particular order)...

1. Black & White Print Dresses: They're classic and stylish with just enough flair. Perfect for dinner with friends, a date or business cocktail meetings. Carmona Silk Dress by White House Black Market

2. TobyMac's Welcome To Diverse City: This CD never gets old and I can listen to it from beginning to end. Its positive, fun music with a wonderful message: Jesus loves you as you are!

3. Gardenias: The fragrance from these beauties is quite heavy but they are so elegant and classy.

4. The Bellagio Conservatory: I reside in Las Vegas and every month or so I pay the lovely Bellagio a visit just to gaze around the conservatory. This past fall the conservatory was designed with fall foliage including orange petaled arches, a water mill, a bridge and stream and raining copper trees. Truly a marvel to behold.

5. Black Furniture: Its not so practical in a dusty desert like Vegas but it looks stunning in well designed residential interiors.

6. The Chronicles of Narnia: I purchased a copy of this book a while ago and couldn't put it down. I remember seeing PBS versions of the stories as a child. It is a children's book but the story is so whimsical and heart warming.

7. Beacon Hill Fabrics: Plush and stylish, Beacon Hill is a favorite of mine when it comes to adding color and texture to any space.

8. Romantic Comedies: In the words of my good friend Corliss, "I'm in love with love!" I just adore watching couples endure mishaps and opposition as they eagerly search for one another's affection in these films. Some of my favorites are Serendipity, 50 First Dates, Brown Sugar and Hitch.

9. Prayer: Nothing in this world is more exhilarating, humbling and profound than time spent between me and my maker. Sometimes it ends in laughter, other times it ends in tears but I always come out thankful, refreshed and full of hope.

10. Eyeshadow: With fun shades and cool names, MAC and Urban Decay have won me over. I love color and what better way to have fun with color than to "make up" my eyes with these fun shadows.

Blogspired???

As I struggle to keep my concentration on the work at hand, (reconfiguring cubicles in a rather stylish cubicle, I might add) I can't help but wander to a place far away; perhaps the coast of Maui or browsing the myriad of shops on Melrose in Los Angeles. In any event, they both involve the act of observing and indulging in our natural surroundings; a true gift from God.
